Dubai to dazzle the world with iconic New Year's Eve Gala at Burj Khalifa

Dubai, UAE: Dubai is all set to dazzle the world once again with its iconic New Year's Eve Gala by Emaar Properties at Downtown Dubai.

An experience of a lifetime, the spectacular fireworks display at Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, is set to underscore its credentials as the most popular New Year's celebration across the globe, with millions of visitors expected to attend the festivities in Downtown Dubai.

Hosting over 1.7 million visitors from around the world last year - more than the number of visitors at New Year's galas in New York, London, and Sydney - the Downtown Dubai New Year's Eve Gala, this year, will be differentiated by ten unprecedented fireworks acts.

With several viewing points for visitors in Downtown Dubai, the New Year's celebration will also be streamed live on www.youtube.com/DowntownDubai, reaching millions of online audiences in real time. Emaar has joined forces with government entities across the Emirate to guarantee the celebration of a lifetime.

Emaar is also promoting active online engagement with the spectators encouraged to upload photographs and videos of the New Year's Eve celebrations on social networks, using the hashtag #BeThere.

Ahmad Al Matrooshi, Managing Director, Emaar Properties, said: "The New Year's Eve Gala at Burj Khalifa enjoys iconic status globally and underlines Dubai's reputation as the must-visit destination to usher in the New Year. Dubai's gala at Downtown Dubai will significantly add to the city's civic pride, boost the tourism, hospitality and retail sectors, and salute the city's win to host the World Expo 2020, with visitors expected from all over the world."

He added: "Emaar's New Year's celebration is a salute to the positivity, hope, and cheer that Dubai brings to the world. Through the gala, we are inviting the world to welcome the New Year in one of the most dynamic cities. This year, the fireworks display will be extra special with ten spectacular effects, some rising higher than 1 km, which not only salute our nation and the city, but also the design of Burj Khalifa."

In addition to several vantage-viewing galleries, the public can enjoy the fireworks from the central Burj Park, which will wear a festive ambience with a number of temporary kiosks for food & beverage and New Year merchandise. The event has already recorded strong buzz globally with robust advance booking for hotel rooms in Downtown Dubai.
Starting with a dramatic display of effects racing up to the pinnacle of Burj Khalifa, 828 metres high, the display will then salute the nation with the green, red, and white hues of the UAE National Flag. Flowers in the colours of the National Flag will cascade down the tower, before silver pearls will burst from the pinnacle of Burj Khalifa in a sparkling celebration of Dubai's success and awe-inspiring development. In a gesture of the warm welcome that Dubai extends to the world, the next act will witness thousands of amethysts launched in every direction and filling the sky.

Integrating shades of amber and with silver illumination flowing down the tower in gentle elegance, the next act is a tribute to Burj Khalifa and the global collaboration it has promoted. The other acts include elegant green and gold willow comets, silhouetting the vertical lines of the building; and a recreation of the design inspiration of the tower, with fireworks evolving like petals and wrapping it up the tower much like the Hymenocallis desert flower, which inspired the design of Burj Khalifa.

The grand finale will be a true masterpiece in fireworks display with every direction being lit up dramatically and a golden lattice being formed across the sky. Rainbow effects will fill all over Downtown Dubai as Dubai ushers in 2014.
Emaar is providing live satellite feeds of the New Year's Eve celebration to global audiences, with details of frequency and uplink to be provided shortly.

Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties sign joint venture to develop The Lagoons

Dubai, UAE; October 7, 2013: Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties PJSC today signed a joint venture agreement to develop The Lagoons, a magnificent waterfront city that will define the ambitious new face of Dubai's future, within Mohammed Bin Rashid City (MBR City).

A master-planned city for tomorrow's youth with state-of-the-art technology networks, the project is spread over an area of 6 million sq metres (over 1,482 acres). Over three times the size of Downtown Dubai, the integrated development creates a dynamic environment for tomorrow's world, and takes into account the rapidly evolving lifestyle aspirations of the tech-savvy and connected youth community.
Inspired and built by the banks of the Dubai Creek, the historic source of the city's development and the cradle of Dubai's heritage, this prestigious project will bridge modernity with tradition, by upholding the core values that have shaped Dubai as a cosmopolitan hub that is home to over 200 nationalities.
A Future City for Tomorrow's Youth
In a joint statement, Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, and Ahmad Bin Byat, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Holding, said: "His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, constantly reminds us that Dubai has achieved less than 10 per cent of its development potential. Dubai has always been a forward-looking city, and today, as we enter our next phase of growth led by our youth, it is important that National Champion companies such as Dubai Holding and Emaar work jointly to launch projects that are important to boost the city's future development.
"As the city further underlines its credentials as a global hub by welcoming professionals and entrepreneurs from around the world, and led by the Dubai Tourism Vision to record 20 million visitors by the turn of the decade, it is important to continue to build our world-class infrastructure to meet future needs. The project, which will be a new catalyst for growth and create robust opportunities for commerce and entrepreneurship, will set new benchmarks in urban development, with its focus on the tech-savvy and connected youth population who are taking centrestage in driving Dubai's impressive growth.
"We are thus creating a vibrant destination that will not only address their lifestyle requirements of modern retail, entertainment and hospitality, but also connect them to their Arab heritage. This prestigious development fulfills His Highness Sheikh Mohammed's vision by creating a world-class infrastructure that will firmly establish Dubai as one of the Top 10 global cities by 2020. Truly world-class in design, it will be an inspiring work, play and live environment with several iconic developments, further driving the city's growth."
An Iconic New Skyline for Dubai
At the heart of the project is The Dubai Twin Towers, a mixed-use iconic development that defines a new skyline for the city, and is envisaged to join the rank of the world's most prestigious skyscrapers.
The fully integrated community brings a new aspirational lifestyle with a central business district, an entrepreneurial zone, cultural amenities, residences, premium and affordable luxury hotels, educational facilities, healthcare centres, a waterfront shopping mall and a wide range of leisure choices. All these key components of this world-class development are designed as inter-connected districts, around waterfronts and green boulevards.
A New City Centre
The project stretches from the banks of the Dubai Creek, through central parcels of land linked to Al Khail Road and across Ras Al Khor. It serves as a modern architectural continuum from Dubai Creek to the modern business and lifestyle centres of the city today.
The distinguishing feature of the development is its focus on creating distinctive neighbourhoods, which are pedestrian friendly. It will be supported by several sustainable transport modes including a direct link with Dubai Metro's Red and Green Lines, an eco-tram system, light monorail, and water taxis.
The sweeping waterfront of the project lined by retail, commercial and residential zones will be built around two central parks. The 'green' theme will further resonate in several environmental-friendly features including eco-resorts, water features, and gardens. A number of small marinas will also be developed across the waterfront, providing the entire spectrum of lifestyle choices for residents and visitors.

More space for women on Dubai Metro

RTA expands female compartment space for peak hour rides

Dubai: More space is being provided for female commuters of Dubai Metro with the rising demand and changing pattern of ridership, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

With the current women-only compartment being insufficient, RTA has moved to add half a cabin for women during peak hours. The total number of cars on the Metro is five, one of which is divided into a Gold compartment and a female compartment. The expansion will limit the general commuters to three and a half cabins.

“We do regular studies and we have a system of receiving complaints and feedback. We received several requests from female commuters for expanding the women only space on the Metro,” Ramadan Abdullah, Director of Metro operations at RTA’s Rail Agency, said.

Following the requests from commuters, he added, RTA carried out a survey to find out whether there is actually a need for expansion.

“We found out that during peak hours the women-only cabins are more congested when compared to the mixed cabins so we took the decision to expand the space for women during peak hours,” he explained.

The survey also found out that there has been a noticeable increase in the number of women using the Metro over the last couple of years.

“As more women and children are using the Metro now, we want to make sure the Metro trip is smoother and more comfortable for them, especially as this segment of Metro users need more privacy and security,” he added.

The extension service will be active from September 1 during peak hours from 7am to 9am and from 5pm to 8pm from Sunday to Thursday.

Abdullah said that the additional space would not only offer greater comfort to women but also easy movement of strollers and bags.

The additional spaces are clearly marked on all the trains and Metro security officers will be on hand to make sure there is no violation.

“I think this is an excellent move by RTA. This has been due for long as the ridership on the Metro has increased and during peak hours the female compartments are generally packed and more space would surely help,” said Nafia Rahman, a regular commuter.

However, expanding the women-only compartment on the Metro means taking away space from the general compartment, which is also cramped during peak hours.

“To me it doesn’t make sense. I understand the need for privacy and security of women but reducing the space from the general compartment will cause more problems for general commuters, who are cramped for space during peak hours,” said Dinesh Gor, who takes peak hour trains twice daily.

Currently, Dubai Metro transports around 400,000 commuters on both Red and Green lines daily. Catering to the growing demand, RTA has reduced the peak hour train frequency on the Red line to three minutes.

“Addressing the commuters’ concern we have reduced the peak hour train frequency to every three minutes. We have added more trains, with 46 trains running on the Red line alone during peak hours. This will ensure commuters spend less time waiting while also ensuring that trains are less cramped,” stated Abdullah.

The five-cabin Dubai Metro can accommodate around 650 passengers, with each cabin having a capacity of 130 passengers. Following the expansion the female compartment on each train will accommodate around 130 passengers, which is double the earlier number.

Tall Claim: Dubai now has the world's tallest twisted tower

The Dh1 billion Infinity Tower in Dubai Marina, the world's tallest tower featuring a 90-degree twist, has been completed, according to its developer.

Cayan Investment and Development, a Saudi-based property development company, said it has received the Dubai Municipality’s certificate of completion and will be inaugurating the tower on Monday.
The 75-storey tower is approximately 310 metres high, which makes it the highest twisted tower in the entire world, company president Ahmed M Al Hatti said.
Dubai is already home to Burj Khalifa (828 metres), the world's tallest tower, Princess Tower (414 metres), the world's highest residential tower and JW Marriott Marquis (355 metres), the world's highest hotel.
Infinity Tower has been designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill, the firm behind Burj Khalifa.
Thanks to its 90 degree curve from top to bottom, residents will have panoramic views of the Palm Jumeirah or Dubai Marina.
Although the tower will twist similar to the Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden, which is a series of cantilevered plates rotated about a straight structure, Infinity Tower's has much larger floor plates that require the structure to be twisted as it raised from level to level. Each floor is rotated by 1.2 degrees to achieve the full 90-degree spiral, creating the shape of a helix.
The tower will have studios to penthouses, conference rooms, tennis courts, pools, gymnasium, a nursery and a spa.
A total of 68 units are listed for sale in propertyfinder.ae, with prices ranging between Dh1,400 and Dh2,000 per square feet.
Cayan has already handed over are La Residencia Del Mar, Dorrabay and The Jewels in Dubai Marina and Cayan Business Centre in Tecom.
Emporis data reveals that Dubai has 1,881 tall buildings of which 856 exist, 627 are planned, 355 under construction, 42 un-built and one demolished. Overall, there are 909 high-rises and 448 skyscrapers.

The Dubai Fountain Lake Ride is the latest addition to an array of memorable leisure experiences within Downtown Dubai, the flagship mega-development of Emaar Properties. For the first time, visitors have the opportunity to navigate the 30-acre Burj Lake, which is home to one of Dubai's must-visit tourist attractions, The Dubai Fountain, the world's tallest performing fountain.

Burj Lake is lined by several global icons including Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building; The Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping and entertainment destination; Souk Al Bahar, an Arabesque retail and dining out destination; and The Palace Downtown Dubai, a five star premium hotel. It is also a venue of the New Year's Eve Gala, which this year featured the captivating 'Water, Fire & Light' show.

The traditional boats, used for ferrying passengers across the historic Dubai Creek, will be operated by the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) with abras plying the Burj Lake every half hour, with the provision to introduce more abras in due course.

The Dubai Mall sets new global milestone welcoming 65 million visitors in 2012

The Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping and entertainment destination by global property developer Emaar Properties PJSC, has set a new global milestone welcoming 65 million visitors in 2012, an increase of more than 20 percent compared to the 54 million visitors hosted by the mall in 2011. Retail sales across the various outlets in the mall also have reported robust growth of 24 percent over 2011.

Underlining its credentials as the world's most visited shopping and leisure destination, The Dubai Mall surpasses, by far, the annual visitor numbers to all leading shopping malls and leisure attractions in the world, highlighting Dubai's eminent position as a global retail, tourism and business hub. The visitor profile of the mall comprises UAE residents, a cosmopolitan population of over 200 nationalities, and also reflects the tourism demographics of Dubai, with guests arriving from all over the world.
Attracting more number of visitors than the annual tourists to New York City at over 52 million and Los Angeles at 41 million in 2012, The Dubai Mall is today a must-visit destination in Dubai's tourist itinerary, and the most-compelling getaway for retail enthusiasts and leisure seekers. The mall’s central location, only a four-hour flying distance away for a population of over 2.5 billion, makes it the world's busiest fashion, retail and leisure hub, offering a wealth of choices for all visitors.
Mohamed Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said:"The impressive growth achieved by The Dubai Mall is testament to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to further energise the core sectors of the economy including retail, which contributes significantly to the Emirate's GDP. We are thankful to him for his continued guidance and support."
"The visitor footfall to The Dubai Mall has exceeded our expectations every year since its opening in 2008, and in 2012, we marked another landmark by welcoming 65 million visitors. This is complemented by the growth in retail sales of 24 percent compared to 2011. These figures are a clear testament to the the mall's evolution as the city's must-visit tourist and retail hub. Significantly, the strong footfall also reiterates the economic impact of our flagship mall development by creating several thousand new jobs every year and supporting the trade and logistics sector of Dubai, which are key contributors to the economy."
Alabbar added: "The mall's record visitor arrival has also been the result of the sustained value addition that we are focused on creating for our guests. Apart from the choice of global brands and the extensive repertoire of over 1,200 outlets, the mall's leisure attractions are unique and serve as a magnet for tourists. We have also further strengthened accessibility by creating new parking spaces and completing the Metro Link which connects the Dubai Metro station to the mall. The Dubai Mall has clearly set a global benchmark in mall and leisure operations, and we are building on it further with the new expansion programme across 1 million sq feet."
The Dubai Mall's new expansion will feature an unprecedented choice of world-class retail, and hospitality components, taking its total construction area to over 13 million sq ft. The highlight of the mall's retail expansion is the creation of a spectacularly designed boulevard like high-end shopping strip that will feature personalised flagship stores of international brands. Shoppers can experience the unparalleled ambience of strolling along foliage-rich walkways with water features, set on a strip lined by premium stores.
Centrally located in Downtown Dubai, the most prestigious square kilometre on earth and the flagship mega-development of Emaar Properties, The Dubai Mall also serves as the gateway to At the Top, Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest observatory deck with an outdoor terrace. The mall is fronted by the Burj Lake that is home to The Dubai Fountain, the world's tallest performing fountain, which performs an array of international compositions.
Within the mall, the 1,200 retail outlets meet all shopping requirements of visitors – from fashion wear to accessories, electronic appliances to home furnishing, the latest communication gadgets to audio-visual choices, books, jewellery and much more. Several international brands have debuted or opened their flagship stores in the mall, with the regions’ first Bloomingdale's and Galeries Lafayette serving as anchor stores. Last year, many new international retail concepts were added to the mall.
In 2012, the mall not only strengthened the offering of its dedicated fashion precinct, the 440,000 sq ft Fashion Avenue, but also introduced The Souk, an elegantly designed showcase of jewellery, accessories and traditional Arab attire outlets and handcraft stores. The Dubai Mall also unveiled The Village that offers a rich collection of denim brands and brings an outdoor community feel with tree-lined walkways, cafés and restaurants. Featuring a fully retractable roof, The Village is open during winter months enabling visitors to have a true outdoor feel.
The mall hosted several celebrities last year from the film, art and music world, in addition to hosting international exhibitions and roadshows, all strengthening its appeal to visitors. In addition to the 200 F&B outlets that bring together families and friends, the mall's world-class leisure attractions including Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, with thousands of aquatic animals; SEGA Republic, the largest of its kind indoor theme park; KidZania®, the dedicated children’s city; Dubai Ice Rink, an Olympic sized ice rink; and the 22-screen Reel Cinemas that can seat over 2,800 people, all attracted the world to Dubai.
Described as 'The Centre of Now,' the US$20 billion Downtown Dubai features Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, several world-class hotels, thousands of residential apartments and modern offices, among others. DSF adds Dh117b in 17 years

Visitor numbers have increased from 1.6m in 1996, when it started, to 4.3m in 2012, a 168.7% increase

Dubai: Faisal Vahedna invested a few thousand dirhams to start his electronics retail business, Vahedna Trading, in Deira in 1996.

Prior to that, he worked for 12 years in his uncle’s shop, Ashrafi Electronics, where he learned the tricks of the trade.
It was in the middle of an unprecedented retail boom in Dubai, caused by the growing demand for electronics and household appliances in Russia, the Central Asian and East European countries — that have been liberated from socialist regimes and have moved to a free economy, something which triggered the demand. Due to easy accessibility, Dubai benefited most. As a result, electronics thrived in the city.
Vahedna Trading is in Sabkha, Deira – the meeting place between Dubai’s wholesale and retail businesses. On one side of Sabkha lies Murshid Bazaar – the wholesale market, close to the Dubai Creek where wooden dhows load a large number of electronics and household goods destined for a number of countries including Iran, India, Pakistan and African coastal markets.
Sabkha, Dubai’s centre for trade, wholesale and retail activities, also remains crowded in the evenings – as a meeting place for traders and customers. It is always abuzz with shoppers. It was an ideal location for Vahedna to expand his business. However, his wholesale and re-export business picked up faster than retail operations.
It was no coincidence that the same year the Dubai Government also launched the annual Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF)  to boost the emirate’s retail, trade and tourism sectors.
From a small shop Vahedna Trading today has grown into a Dh1 billion turnover company that deals in electronics, household and information technology items, thanks to DSF, among other factors.
“Many people think that the DSF attracts just tourists and shoppers. During the last 17 years, my company has attracted so many traders, who later came back to place large-scale orders,” Vahedna tells Gulf News. “After their first visit, most of them usually start trading with us.”
His retail business also thrived due to the high influx of tourists and shoppers. He says, this way, Dubai has managed to divert many traders from other major hubs – such as Singapore and Hong Kong to the emirate.
“All of them are here for the DSF,” Vahedna says.
Millions of visitors spend billions of dollars during the DSF every year to help boost the economy of Dubai and the UAE, especially the retail, tourism, airlines, transport, restaurants and entertainment sectors that thrive on higher sale throughout its duration.
Government strategy
More than 50 million visitors spent a total of Dh117 billion during the DSF so far, a spokesperson of Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment (DEPE), organisers of DSF, told Gulf News. This translates to a per capita spending of Dh2,340 ($638) per visitor to the DSF.
The DSF was also part of the government’s strategy to diversify its economy and reduce dependency on hydrocarbon to make it more sustainable once oil runs out. Since its inception, it has been paying off the emirate rich dividends year after year.
Most retailers make provisions for larger inventories for DSF. “We usually witness a 25 per cent increase in sales of electronics, household and IT products,” Salim M.A., Director of Lulu Hypermarkets, in Dubai, tells Gulf News. “We start building inventories for the DSF two months prior to the festival to ensure the smooth supply of the goods.”
Every year, the Dubai Government ropes in key private sector entities in a sponsorship programme to part-finance the DSF budget that are spent in advertisement, marketing and promotion of the event at a grand scale to help attract tourists and shoppers.
The success and the return on investment are so high that the same business houses, conglomerates and corporations come back every year to support the government in organising the DSF. This is perhaps the best example of how public-private partnerships could boost a local economy.
“This remarkable journey of success was planned by Dubai’s leadership decades ago, for their farsighted vision and their determination to achieve the set plans has seen the city through challenging times,” Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and CEO of Emirates airline and Group, said in a statement issued last month.
When one thinks of Dubai, the image one portrays of the city is that of a hub for trade, tourism, retail and financial services. Others consider Dubai – the city of superlatives – as a collection of some tall towers. Very rarely does one realise that Dubai is also a place abuzz with events throughout the year.
It is the events sector that makes things happen in this city of two million people and  attracts more than 10 million tourists annually – be it for business deals, exhibition, conferences, corporate meetings or  sports.  These activities bring people closer and bridges cultures in the true to the spirit of the DSF slogan, “One World, One Family, One Festival”.
“Foreign visitors during this festival have increased from 1.6 million in 1996 (since inception) to 4.3 million in 2012, a 168.7 per cent increase over 17 years which indicates the success of this event year on year,” Bharath M, analyst at Frost and Sullivan, told Gulf News. According to a research by YouGov, overall consumer spending during DSF has a significant impact on Dubai’s economy, bringing in more than Dh14.7 billion during the 2012 DSF – or the equivalent of $1 billion per week.
Tourism
Gassan Aridi, Chief Executive Officer of Alpha Tours, told Gulf News: “The DSF has been a major contributor to Dubai’s tourism industry and the overall economy. We usually receive 25 to 30 per cent more visitors to Dubai when hotel occupancy remains high. Besides, tour operators remain extremely busy with increasing number of city tours, desert safari, dinner cruises and other activities.”
Total shopping spend rose from Dh8.7 billion to Dh8.9 billion, and accommodation spend was up from Dh2.7 billion to Dh2.8 billion, DEPE said in a report. “Our offering in retail and events is, we believe, second to none, and we will strive through a coordinated government approach and through continued and innovative partnerships between our public and our private sectors,” Sami Al Qamzi, Director General of the Department of Economic Development, said in a statement in December.
The International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA), the world’s leading events trade association, crowned Dubai with the prestigious “World Festival and Event City 2012” recognition last year in the category for cities with a population of more than one million. DSF was one of the highlighted events in the award entry.
“The Dubai Shopping Festival has broken new ground in establishing tourism and retail standards and benchmarks. Further, DSF has also successfully showcased the capability of Dubai and the UAE in hosting events of an international scale,” Ebrahim Saleh, Coordinator-General of DEPE, told Gulf News.
“Through a combination of world-class events and mind-boggling shopping-related offerings DSF has succeeded in creating a base of tens of thousands of repeat visitors, as well as enticing new tourists to visit Dubai during DSF,” he says.
The power of DSF sale are felt not only by the retailers, but also the credit card brands, such as Visa, which remained a loyal partner of the DSF for a long time. International visitors to the UAE have spent over $153 million  on their Visa cards in the first week of Dubai Shopping Festival 2013, registering a massive 34 per cent year-on-year growth over the first week of DSF 2012, according to statistics issued today by Visa. Karim Beg, Visa’s Head of Regional Marketing for MENA, said, “Visa achieved a 22 per cent year on year growth during DSF 2012, with inbound card spend totalling more than  $497 million (Dh1.82 billion) compared to $406 million during DSF 2011.”
